Many Americans fail to understand that they routinely display levels of nationalism seen elsewhere in the world only at, like, the rallies of obscure neo-fascist political parties. And many who do recognize that fact think it’s some harmless quirk of American culture, instead of one of the reasons it’s impossible to have a coherent conversation at any meaningful level of government about issues like the size of defense spending, the responsible use of American military power overseas, and the scope of the mission of the CIA.
Actually, that should read “only at the rallies of obscure neo-fascist political parties, and during the World Cup”
